A trip to Pago del Humo & La Raya, Chiclana de la Frontera

Pago del Humo is located to the East of Chiclana de la Frontera city centre in the southern region of Spain’ Costa de la Luz. Travelling down the Ruta del Caballo takes you through Pago del Humo, into La Raya. It is one of the largest semi rural areas of the city and has many English residents. There are many holiday rental villas owned by English people living here and in the UK.

There are six bars & restaurants along the Ruta del Caballo in Pago del Humo and they all serve local food. Two of the main ones are Casa Blas (Sorpresa) and Florentina, both have large restaurant areas and a wide variety on the menu at a reasonable price. One of our favorites in the area is Venta Angelin. Mostly occupied by Spanish locals, Angelin serves some Delicious food and the prices are very reasonable. We call for coffee and breakfast often and the full baguette sandwich is a popular choice from the menu and is large enough for 2 or 3 people to share as a snack at lunchtime. Two of the bars have a mini market attached, these are Casa Blas and Angelin. There’s also a chemist nearby and a car boot sale at the small bar over the road from Casa Blas.

The smaller area of La Raya, further along the road, has one main bar, Venta La Raya. They host music events throughout the summer, serve food and tapas throughout the day and a run a car boot sale most Sundays.

There are many narrow streets off the road which runs through Pago del Humo which are crammed with property mostly occupied by residents but many attractive holiday rental villas start to appear where the houses start to thin out towards the ends of the streets. Driving out past Venta La Raya gives a real feeling for the countryside, where many of the houses rely on solar and wind powered electricity supplies.

Pago del Humo is an area to visit where car hire is definitely advised, being around 8 miles to La Barrosa beach, but there are regular buses into Chiclana and if you don’t mind walking up the dusty tracks to the main road to catch the bus then you will be okay. Being around 5 miles to the city centre and the nearest supermarket, and a taxi backto your holiday villa will cost you around €10-€20 depending on which part you’re staying in.
